Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) is a common form of tax exemption offered by organizations to employees. It is an allowance paid to employees that can be claimed only for domestic travel while the employee is on leave.
The government defines blocks of years to avail LTA benefits. These blocks are predetermined and are set as per the calendar year. LTA tax exemption can be claimed twice during the block period, which is of four calendar years. The current block period is 1 Jan 2013–31 Dec 2017. You can also carry forward one LTA claim to the next block if you didn’t claim it in the current block.
LTA can be claimed for any billable mode of transport
You have to upload a leave approval note from your employer for the travel period along with the following documents based on the mode of travel:
Yes, one LTA claim could be brought forward and claimed in the first year of the next block. Let’s say you do not take your LTA in 2006–09 or that you use only one LTA, you will be able to take the pending LTA in 2010. This means that in the FY 2010–13 block, you will be entitled to a total of three journeys.
As per Income Tax rules, a person is eligible to claim LTA from the starting point to the farthest point for a journey. If you visit multiple places between these two points, you are eligible to claim LTA.
Yes. You as an employee can claim LTA for your spouse and children, dependent parents and siblings.
The current block period is 1 Jan 2014–31 Dec 2017. So, if you travel between 27 Dec 2017 and 3 Jan 2018, you could still claim your LTA under the 2014–2017 block period in Jan 2018.
This is defined by your employer.
