How to activate debit card

Debit cards help pay bills, shop online, and withdraw cash. But before you can do that, you must activate your card

A debit card is a financial tool you can use to make payments online or offline. Financial authorities issue debit cards when you open an account with them. These cards are necessary to withdraw cash as well, although you cannot do anything if the debit card is inactive. It is necessary for cardholders to activate their debit card before using it.

How to activate a debit card?

There are multiple methods to activate a debit card. Each of them is equally convenient and easy. It is up to you to decide which method suits you.

How to activate a new card via ATM?

You can perform an ATM card activation by:

  • Opening the envelope sent by the bank. It has your four-digit PIN and debit card.
  • Insert the debit card in the ATM.
  • Input the debit card number and the ATM pin provided by the bank.
  • Create a new ATM pin.
  • Follow the directions on the machine to enter your new ATM pin.

How to activate your debit card in a contactless manner?

You can activate your debit card digitally as well. Follow these steps to do so:

  • Log in to the internet banking portal of your bank.
  • In the gateway, look for the "Debit Card" section.
  • Then, select any option that reads "generate PIN" or "make PIN" from the drop-down menu.
  • The website will offer you information on how to register your debit card when you select the option.
  • Activate your debit card online by following the instructions given on the ATM screen.

Call your bank's customer service number if you cannot locate an option to activate your debit card online. If the bank does not offer the service online, the representatives will tell you how you can activate your card offline.

How to activate debit cards by phone banking?

To activate your debit card by mobile banking, you must:

  • Call on your bank’s phone banking number.
  • Speak with a customer service employee at your bank.
  • Once connected, follow the directions provided to you during the phone call to activate your debit card.

Some banks send the OTP to the consumer's registered phone number for verification and activation of a debit card. As a result, when activating your debit card, keep your phone with the registered mobile number near you.
