Update Request Number

An individual might need to update their Aadhaar details in case they need to change their basic demographic details such as name and address. Not just this, they might also need to update details including their email ID, mobile number, or their relationship status. Now, the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) provides online as well as offline processes for individuals looking to update to their Aadhaar cards. For both these processes, the individual would need to save their URN (Update Reference Number). In this article, we will guide you with:

  1. Updating your Aadhaar card online and receiving your Update Reference Number (URN).
  2. How to check your URN status offline
  3. How to check your URN status online

Keep reading to know the definition of a URN and the ways to know your URN status, both online and offline.

What is URN?

Any online or offline changes made to an Indian citizen’s Aadhaar card are processed through a URN which helps determine the status of the request. The URN is automatically generated by the system once the individual submits a request for updating their Aadhaar details. Make sure to keep your URN safe since it is required for tracking the status of updating your Aadhaar details.

How to get a URN?

Here are the steps to be followed to track the status of your Update Reference Number online. Here are the instructions that you must follow to update your Aadhaar card online.

  • Carry out a web search for the term ‘myAadhaar login’ or follow this link.
  • Click on the ‘Login’ button on the right-hand side of the page.
  • You will be led to another page where you will be required to enter your Aadhaar number and a Captcha. Enter these details.
  • Click on ‘Send OTP’.
  • Enter the one-time password sent to your registered mobile number in the assigned field and click on ‘Login’.
  • Proceed to select the personal details that you wish to update in your Aadhaar and enter the revised details.
  • Provide a supporting document, such as documents establishing your address.
  • On the successful upload of the supporting document, you will receive a 14-digit URN.

A URN is a 14-digit number that is written as a series of four, five, and five numbers respectively; separated by forward slashes.

  • Choose the fields that need to be updated.
  • Fill up the required data in these fields.
  • Click ‘Submit’ to generate your URN.
  • Choose the BPO for reviewing the updated details.
  • Upload the original scan of the required document.
  • Use the URN that is generated to check the status of your Aadhaar updates.

How to check URN status online?

1. Through UIDAI’s website:

If you want to keep things simple, you can check your URN from the same website that generated it. We have assumed, in this method, that you are already aware of your URN. Kindly follow the below-mentioned steps to proceed.

  • Carry out a web search for the term ‘myAadhaar login’ or follow this link.
  • Click on the ‘Login button’ on the right-hand side of the page.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and URN.
  • Enter your Service Request Number (SRN) and key in the Captcha code displayed on the screen. An SRN is a 14-digit Service Request Number that gets generated once you raise a request for an Aadhaar card on UIDAI’s website.
  • Click on ‘Get status’.
  • Your URN status will be displayed on the screen.

Kindly note: In case the status displayed reads ‘URN number invalid’, it means that UIDAI is yet to process your URN. Write to UIDAI at help@uidai.gov.in to resolve any concerns.

2. By placing a phone call:

You can also check your URN by placing a phone call. Here is how you can do it.

  • Dial the number 1947 on your phone. This is UIDAI’s toll-free number which will trigger an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) interaction.
  • Choose your preferred language by entering a number.
  • Confirm whether you have an Aadhaar number.
  • Follow the instructions provided in the IVR interaction to check your URN status. The IVR interaction can help you know your URN status.

3. Through your SRN (if you do not know your URN):

If the IVR interaction is not preferable, you can also choose to know your URN status through your SRN. We recommend this step for people who do not know their URN while trying to check its status.

  • Carry out a web search for the term ‘myAadhaar login’ or follow this link.
  • Scroll down to find the ‘Check Aadhaar PVC Card Order Status’ option and click on it.
  • Enter your SRN and the Captcha displayed on the screen.
  • Click on ‘Check Status’.

For those wondering about a traditional method of finding out about one’s URN, it is possible to do so by visiting an Aadhaar Card Enrolment Centre. Do not forget to carry your acknowledgment slip and URN. Once at the centre, request the official in charge for your URN update.
