If you do not act quickly, losing your credit card can affect your finances. Here is a step-by-step guide to follow if you have lost your credit card

Credit cards have transformed the way we spend money. They have handed flexibility and delivered convenience, giving us freedom to use it whenever we need. Credit card usage is, hence, only set to increase, although credit card holders must beware of frauds to ensure capital and data protection.

Fraudsters try and again access to your credit card account to gain money. They can do so by getting sensitive information about your credit card or opening a new credit card account for you. Once they have access to your credit card information, they can spend money lavishly without worrying about the bill.

Steps to follow if your credit card is lost or stolen

Follow the below steps if your credit card is lost or stolen:

1. Block your card

If you suspect your credit card has been lost or stolen, call your bank to report the loss. The bank would freeze your card, preventing it from being misused. Alternatively, you can block your card by signing into your online banking app. You can apply for a duplicate credit card after your credit card has been blocked. It could take up to 7-14 days for the bank to send you the new card.

2. File a complaint

After you have notified the bank regarding the loss of your credit card, go to the nearest police station to file a police report. It ensures you are not held accountable if the card is used fraudulently. The FIR also provides legal proof that you have lost your credit card and assists you in obtaining another card.

3. Check your credit report

You must immediately notify your card issuer that your credit card is lost. It will enable them to place a fraud alert on your account, ensuring that your credit score is not harmed. You should also verify your credit history and report any fraudulent transaction to the credit rating agency.

4. Assess your bill

Even after reporting that your credit card has been lost, you must keep a close eye on your credit card bill on your banking app. If you notice any unusual transactions, call your bank to file a complaint.

5. Update your information

After you have requested a replacement credit card online, update your new card details wherever necessary. It will ensure that you do not miss payments.

While credit card companies are aware of the problem and have strategies in place to prevent illegal use of credit card, cardholders can also take measures to safeguard their information.

How to prevent your credit card from getting lost?

Here are a few ways to ensure you do not lose your credit card:

  • Only carry credit cards you use frequently.
  • Ensure your credit card is in a secure location.
  • If you are terminating your credit card account, ensure you destroy the magnetic stripe and chip of the credit card before throwing it.
  • Protect your credit card CVV number, PIN, and other personal information. Never give out your CVV or PIN to anyone.
  • Review your credit card statement regularly. Notify the bank if you discover a transaction you did not make.

Avoid giving up your credit card number over the phone. You will never be asked for any personal information related to your credit card by the bank. Do not interact with someone if they ask for your credit card information, such as your CVV number, expiration date, or PIN.
