6 common networking mistakes to avoid while building a professional network

08 Mar 2022 by Team FinFIRST

There's no denying that a solid professional network can help you build a successful career. Networking can help you develop new skills and improve your existing skill-sets. Additionally, it can help you stay updated with your industry's latest trends and market opportunities. Good connections can even help you grow your business or get better jobs with better paycheques.

For example, with opportunities like IDFC FIRST Bank's MyFIRST Partner Refer and Earn Program, you can make some extra income and build a robust professional network.

However, to succeed and make money through this program or any other alternative career, it's imperative to avoid a few common networking mistakes listed below.

1. Sending connection requests without a message

Sending connection requests without a formal message may not be a good idea for many reasons. It could show you in a bad light, make it difficult to break the ice, and initiate a conversation with the person you want to add to your network, or the person on the opposite side may not recognise you. Hence, there are high chances that they may deny your connection request.

Instead, drop in a formal message while sending connection requests via social media platforms to inform the other person who you are, your profession, and why you want to connect with them.

2. Being too pushy or annoying

No one wants to connect with a stranger unless they share a mutual interest or benefit, and especially not all the time. While trying to build a network, many unknowingly become too pushy by constantly texting the other person or following up. It could ruin your reputation and become a problem when you seek referrals for the future.

For instance, as an IDFC FIRST Bank's MyFIRST Partner, it is crucial that you build a strong connection with your customers since referrals can help you further grow. While it is essential that you lay out all the necessary information, however, giving them time to make a decision is important as well.

Ensure to state the purpose of every conversation, stick to the agenda, and ensure you are clear about the timelines. Understand whether the other person wants to connect or not before sending them incessant messages. And follow-up only when appropriate and if they show some interest.

3. Establish ground rules and boundaries

Defining your limits and knowing the difference between personal and professional communication is another crucial networking aspect. You must know what to talk about, the right time, and how much to speak. You must also convey your boundaries to the other person. This will help in the long run, especially while you're building your professional network as an IDFC FIRST Bank's MyFIRST Partner.

Whenever you notice that you or a potential acquaintance/ customer is crossing the boundary, press the stop button then and there; but do so politely. You can also state your limitations and reach out to your Relationship Manager to help the customer with the right information. Not drawing a boundary or being unclear about your scope of work can ruin your relationship with a person at the professional level.

4. Focusing only on new contacts

People often only focus on establishing new connections and building a rapport with them, so they tend to forget the ones they've made. With such an approach, you may create new connections but lose touch with old ones you have invested time in and who can even help you form new relationships by introducing you to people in their network.

When facing a time crunch, something as simple as commenting on their social media posts, sending season greetings, etc., helps. This way, they will respond when you approach them for a work-related query. It also keeps them in your mind if they have a requirement that they know you can help with.

5. Starting a conversation without a goal

Without clear goals and a path of action, most networking discussions or conversations will lead nowhere. Any discussion needs a concrete objective to see if it's benefitting the other person and you or helping either to achieve a goal. While having a pleasant chit-chat with a stranger is not a bad idea either, it's important to steer your conversation in the right direction whenever you see an opportunity.

For example, if you're looking for a new job and networking with people from your industry, your goal should be to know about their work and discuss your skill-sets to see if there's a better opportunity in their company.

6. Failing to show gratitude

A simple "thank you" or genuine appreciation can go a long way in creating a long-lasting impression on someone. And this should be whether or not the person was able to help you. Simple acts of gratitude, including assisting them with a task, appreciating their work, introducing them to a potential client, etc., has the power to show them that you genuinely care and should be in their network of people.

This can also benefit you when you seek help and need their assistance.

Networking correctly not only helps you at work but also when you are planning to start an alternative career for yourself. Opportunities like IDFC FIRST Bank's MyFIRST Partner Program offer an excellent platform to not only network but on which you can build a successful career.

This referral program enables you to help someone get a personal loan while earning payouts on every disbursement and build a solid professional network that can help you in your career.
