Health & Sanitation

Our Heath and Sanitation program equips communities with the right knowledge and tools to manage solid waste, thereby leading to a cleaner community with sustainable efforts.

Swachh Worli Koliwada Program

IDFC FIRST Bank, in collaboration with Stree Mukti Sanghatana and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, is engaged in the "Swachh Worli Koliwada" project. The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure cleanliness in the Worli Koliwada community, raise awareness, and foster behavioral and sustainable change regarding solid waste management practices and source segregation. The project follows a participatory approach, involving community participation at every stage, with the aim of creating a zero-waste neighborhood comprising self-sustainable zones capable of managing the solid waste they generate.

The program emphasizes the implementation of best practices in solid and wet waste management at the community and household levels, leading to a reduction in health risks and exposure to biohazards. Additionally, the project incorporates "Behavior Change" campaigns utilizing art forms such as theatre and films, targeting influential individuals within the community, particularly women and youth.

Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS), the partner organization, focuses on bringing about economic, social, political, and cultural changes in the lives of women and uplifting the urban poor. SMS addresses the pressing issue of solid waste management and its adverse impact on climate change, aligning with the broader objectives of the project

Our Impact

This program has had a significant impact on the lives of 9,690 households covering an area of 360 acres in Worli Koliwada. As part of the initiative, over eight lakh kilograms of wet waste was collected, with close to three lakh kilograms being processed into compost. IDFC FIRST Bank has provided funding for the establishment of infrastructure for dry waste segregation, including a machine capable of producing 1,000 kilograms of compost per day. In total, over ninety-four thousand kilograms of dry waste have been collected and sent for recycling to the Municipal Council of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).Extensive awareness activities have been conducted, including over 150 awareness sessions involving students and community members. Given that Worli Koliwada is primarily a fishing community, efforts have been made to engage local businesses in using fish waste to create high-quality compost. These efforts aim to build sustainability within the program by creating revenue sources through the generated compost.
