Rogue Mobile Applications

Rogue banking apps are illegitimate or “look alike” banking apps with embedded malware designed with purpose to steal sensitive/critical data or banking credentials. Rogue mobile applications are an increasingly attractive attack vector for cybercriminals to carry out online fraud and distribute malware.

How To Spot Rogue Mobile Applications

Do check its reviews, ratings and its developer’s profile before downloading any new application

  1. Some of these apps come with well-written legal terms usually highlighting the fact that the app may charge you. Even if these legal terms make the app seem legitimate, its best you read them carefully.
  2. The rogue app can drain your phone battery really fast, while doing its deeds to steal information. So battery running low might be a sign of infection with malware.
  3. Do Check your phone bill periodically – several times a month and keep tabs on any suspicious activity. If you spot unusual activity in your phone or in your bill, contact your mobile network provider.
  4. Always have a mobile security app from a trusted vendor installed on your device, to spot any malware that wants to get to your phone

What should you do if you installed rogue mobile application on your phone?

  1. The rogue mobile application should be immediately uninstalled from mobile device once identified and restart the mobile device post uninstallation.
  2. Do change the credentials / passwords of registered accounts (mobile banking, email, mobile device authentication etc.) post uninstallation of rogue application
