Recently bought a new car? Congratulations on your purchase! You must be excited to hit the road and enjoy your ride. However, along with the excitement of having a new vehicle, there comes the task of getting it registered under the FASTag system.

With a FASTag, toll booths become mere milestones that you pass without even reducing your speed. It's a small tag that you can attach to your vehicle's windscreen, and it works using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. FASTag registration is quick and easy, and once done, you can enjoy seamless travel across all highways in India.

However, if you are a first-time FASTag user, here are useful tips to ensure a quick and hassle-free FASTag new registration.

1. Choose your issuer carefully

Multiple banks and providers issue FASTag, each one offering different rates, facilities, and customer service experiences. Pick a bank that offers easy recharge options, good customer service, and value-added service.

For example, with IDFC FIRST Bank FASTag, you can find IDFC FIRST Bank agents at over 400 different touch points across major roadways and highways. This widespread presence offers an added layer of convenience. Moreover, the utility of your FASTag balance extends beyond toll payments. You have the option to pay for fuel or parking through your FASTag balance at HPCL retail outlets and selected IOCL outlets.

But that's not all. You also get SMS notifications about toll deductions, FASTag account balance, and detailed e-statements to your registered contact details. These updates offer an easy way to track your toll expenses and maintain a record.

2. Keep necessary documents handy

For registration, you will need to provide KYC documents, Registration Certificate (RC) of your vehicle, PAN, passport-size photographs, and address and ID proof. Gather these before going to the bank or applying online. Having all documents ready speeds up the registration process.

FASTag registration is mandatory for all four-wheelers and above in India. Failure to comply could result in double the toll amount being charged.

3. Where to buy FASTag?

Just like you can complete FASTag registration online, you can buy these tags online from official issuer websites, including banks. You can also visit toll plazas to get your FASTag, simply provide valid identity proofs along with your vehicle’s RC (Registration Certificate) to the representatives at the toll plaza.

4. Remember, one vehicle equals one FASTag

If you own more than one vehicle, you will need separate tags for each. Sensors at toll plazas link each FASTag to a specific vehicle's details. Don't try to use one tag for multiple cars. It won't work. Mismatch of information will lead to delays or penalties. So, make sure you get a different FASTag for each of your vehicles.

5. Top up your FASTag wallet

You can recharge FASTag online through credit card, debit card, NEFT, RTGS, UPI, or internet banking and mobile banking apps. You can view and track all transactions of your FASTag account in your issuer account history and hence plan your expenses better.

6. Test before a long journey

After getting your FASTag, don't set out on a long trip immediately. Test it on a local toll plaza first. This initial test helps confirm that the tag functions properly and that you have installed it correctly. This will ensure that you are not stranded at a toll booth and can travel smoothly throughout your trip. Remember, it's always wiser to prioritise safety over regrets.

So, now you know how to register for a FASTag and other essential tips as a new user, you can enjoy a seamless and convenient toll payment experience. A FASTag not only saves you time but also cuts down on travel hassles. So, go ahead and get your FASTag now!
