A PAN card is one of the most important documents for an Indian national or resident. It acts as a personal identification document and is also required for availing various government and financial services such as opening a bank account, investing, or paying income tax.

While applying for a PAN card through NSDL, e-Mudra, or other government platforms, you receive a PAN card acknowledgement number to track your card status. Let’s understand the details and uses of a PAN card acknowledgement number in the article below. 

 


What is an acknowledgement number in a PAN card?
 

As already mentioned, a PAN acknowledgement number is issued by NSDL and other government organisations that accept PAN applications after you have filed an application for the same. If you have applied through NSDL, the authority issues a 15-digit acknowledgement number whereas, for an application through UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited), the entity generates a 9-digit acknowledgement number.

How to get a PAN card acknowledgement number?
 

You can easily locate the acknowledgement number on the PAN acknowledgement slip or the application form. Anyone who applies for a new PAN card or correction and update receives the PAN acknowledgement number. Once you have successfully submitted the PAN card application, the authority mails you a soft copy of your application details that contains your PAN acknowledgement number.

How to download a PAN card with an acknowledgement number?
 

Using the acknowledgement number, you may download the e-PAN card. The steps to download your Pan card are as follows:

· Visit the NSDL official portal and enter the acknowledgement number in the PAN application section.

· Enter your birth date in MM and YYYY format. Proceed with entering the captcha code and click the submit button.

· Fill out your phone number and email address in the space provided, and then click the 'Generate OTP' button.

· Subsequently, enter the OTP and click the 'validate' button.

· There will be a PDF file available for download. Click on it to obtain the PAN card in PDF format.

Note that the e-PAN card is password-protected, and you need to enter your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format to access the PDF file.

Ways to track the status of your PAN card through the acknowledgement number
 

Here are the steps to check your PAN card status through the acknowledgement number.

1. Visit the official portal of NSDL and navigate to the PAN card status section, or simply make a google search for PAN card application status.

2. Choose the ‘Application Type.’

3. Enter your ‘Acknowledgement Number.’

4. Enter the ‘Captcha Code.’

5. Click on the ‘Submit’ option.

How to track PAN application status without an acknowledgement number?
 

If you have lost or forgotten your PAN acknowledgement number, you can still check your PAN application status. There are three ways to track your PAN application.

· You can track your PAN application using your name and date of birth on the NSDL portal.

· Using the UTI coupon card on the UTI ITSL portal.

· Through already issued PAN card number (Only in case of a PAN card update or correction).

PAN card application is smooth and convenient and now, you can apply from the comfort of your home. When you complete the application process, you will receive an application receipt in your mail along with the acknowledgement number. Keep it safe until you receive your PAN card as it will help you track and register any grievance related to your PAN card.
