IDFC FIRST Bank in partnership with Animedh Charitable Trust run an income generation program to train women from low income groups residing in slums of Mumbai in advance tailoring courses to help them become financially independent by enabling them to start earning from home thereby giving them the freedom to continue in their traditional role as homemakers and earn a sustainable income simultaneously. We have trained 650 women across our three tailoring centers located in Jogeshwari, Andheri and Vashi.
This systematic tailoring program is designed in a 'learn and earn' format that involves three months of skills training followed by three months of mandatory practice which helps women to earn while they learn. Post first three months of skills training, women continue to come to the center to work on different tailoring orders which are given by the garment partners. Each batch receives a certificate on completion of six months of the program. This also includes exposure to factory visits which helps them to understand the nuances of the stitching and tailoring industry at a large scale.
We have trained 650 women across our three tailoring centers located in Jogeshwari, Andheri and Vashi since the commencement of the program in 2017. Average increase in monthly income per batch is 5500 INR and the women join garment industry or set up their own small enterprise from home post completion of this course. Our implementation partner also helps these women avail tailoring machines at subsidized rates to encourage them to start their own tailoring unit.
